England: Council housing families win battle for homes with billionaire aristocrat

Dozens of families living in council housing have won a battle with a billionaire aristocrat who wanted to replace their homes with luxury housing.

A total of 141 tenants, including eight disabled people, would have been relocated up to 12 miles away under plans by Grosvenor, a property group owned by the billionaire Duke of Westminster, Hugh Grosvenor, the Sunday People reports.

However, following a campaign backed by the Sunday People, the property group has offered all 40 families new social housing on the site following its redevelopment.

The Walden House block is leased to Westminster City Council and will be demolished by 2023 to build shops and upmarket homes.

A spokesperson for Westminster City Council said: “Grosvenor has confirmed any redevelopment will result in an increase of social and affordable homes.”
