Glasgow City Mission seeking stories from those it has helped

Doors open GCMHomelessness charity Glasgow City Mission is calling for people who have had links with the charity to come forward and share their stories as part of Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival.

The charity has been faithfully serving those most in need in Glasgow since 1826 – indeed, it is the world’s oldest city mission.

Glasgow City Mission is opening up its five-storey city centre building on September 16 from 11am to 5pm. There will be building tours on offer along with activities for children. As well as hearing stories from the men and women the charity has worked with since 1826, there will be an opportunity for people to share their own stories about associations with Glasgow City Mission across the years.

The theme of this year’s Doors Open Day programme of events is History, Heritage and Archaeology and events will be celebrating Glasgow’s tangible and intangible heritage, including Glasgow’s diverse stories, traditions and culture.

Graham Steven, partnerships and communications manager at Glasgow City Mission, said: “We’ve been trawling through our archives and have unearthed some incredible stories and historical moments of where people struggling in the city have been helped by Glasgow City Mission. We can’t wait to share some of these historical gems of lives transformed with visitors to our Doors Open Day.

“We’re also acutely aware of just how many people have had connections with the charity over the years including many who used to work or volunteer, or have used our services. We’d love to hear more of their stories too.

“Glasgow is a compassionate city and the story of Glasgow City Mission is an important part of the city’s history – sometimes however the stories of those affected by poverty, although a key part of our heritage, can be overlooked.”

To share your story of how Glasgow City Mission has helped people, join us on Saturday or send an email to info@glasgowcitymission.com.

Glasgow City Mission’s city centre building is 20 Crimea Street, between Broomielaw and Argyle Street, G2 8PW. Doors Open Day is open 11am to 5pm.
