Glasgow tenant rights event announced

Paula Guthrie

Tenants in Glasgow will have the chance to put renting questions to industry experts at a tenant conference at the Renfield St. Stephens Church Centre on October 13.

Organisers of the event, SafeDeposits Scotland will be joined by Shelter Scotland and the Scottish Association of Landlords to educate tenants on their rights and responsibilities.

The event is free to attend and will run from 10am-2pm with speakers from each of the organisations involved and the opportunity to ask experts questions about tenancies.

Paula Guthrie, adjudication account manager at SafeDeposits Scotland, will discuss how to deal with disputes over the return of the deposit and how to negotiate with landlords or letting agents. She will be joined by guest speakers; James Mullaney, private renting capacity building officer at Shelter Scotland – discussing private tenants’ rights – and John Blackwood, chief executive at the Scottish Association of Landlords (SAL).

Paula said: “We’d encourage anyone renting privately in Glasgow or the surrounding areas to come along to the event to find out more about their rights and responsibilities.

“In a recent survey we conducted, we discovered that a surprising number of people were unaware of measures designed to protect them. Over 25% of Scottish tenants didn’t know their deposit had to be protected by a government-backed scheme and over 50% didn’t know that they could access a free, impartial dispute resolution service.

“This event should hopefully help to bring that number down and let tenants know what support is out there for them.”
