Minister for local government and housing, Kevin Stewart MSP, visited East Kilbride to see Clyde Valley Housing Association’s recently completed development of 109 new homes at Mavor Avenue.

Located on a former industrial site, the properties provide new, essential, affordable housing of the highest standard.

Comprising 93 units for social rent and 16 apartments for mid-market rent, there is a mix of semi-detached, terraced, cottage flats and apartment blocks.

The community has been shortlisted for the Herald Property Awards, under the Affordable Housing Development of the Year 2017.

CVHA is one of the top ten housing association developers in Scotland for both social and mid-market rented homes, having already built 114 homes since the start of 2016, with 398 currently on site and another 683 planned across Lanarkshire and East Dunbartonshire for delivery before 2021.

In total, CVHA has provided 386 new homes in East Kilbride, where Mr Stewart visited some of our new customers. The Ross family recently moved in from a flat and are now enjoying living in a semi-detached house, which is more suited to their needs. The minister was also shown one of the mid-market rent flats, giving him an insight into the range of tenures and properties on offer.

Built in partnership with McTaggart Construction, the project was achieved through Scottish Government investment of £6.3 million and the support of South Lanarkshire Council. It also boosted the wider economy by supporting job creation including 2 apprenticeships, 6 new jobs and 15 work placements.

Campbell Boyd, chairman of CVHA, said: “We are proud to have made such a substantial impact both nationally and locally. During our 21 years we have invested £270m in providing new homes including £158m government grant and innovation funding. We will continue to play a vital role in meeting local housing needs and employability through our new programme.”

Housing minister Kevin Stewart added: “This gGovernment is committed to making housing more accessible for all, and we will invest over £3 billion to deliver at least 50,000 affordable homes over this parliamentary term. The Mavor Avenue development is an excellent example of this scale and ambition to deliver much needed affordable homes in East Kilbride. The homes will not only be a positive addition to the families who will live in them, but also to the wider community.”

McTaggart group director Janice Russell said: “Our team always feel an enormous sense of achievement when they see people move into the homes we build and the communities they then create. Our relationship with Clyde Valley Housing Association was a real partnership and we’re delighted that the feedback is so positive.”

Welcoming the new development, South Lanarkshire Council’s executive director of housing and technical resources, Daniel Lowe, said: “Over the next few years, the council and our partner Housing Associations will be using the resources available through the Scottish Government’s ‘More Homes’ funding to significantly increase the supply of social rented housing in South Lanarkshire. Clyde Valley Housing Association have a long track record of delivering new homes and the Mavor Avenue development will make a valuable contribution to meeting the high level of housing need which exists in East Kilbride.”
