The MSP for Maryhill and Springburn wants energy suppliers to ensure “a humane and consistent approach” for those who cannot afford to top-up power meters, or can’t get out to their homes to do so.

In the letter, Mr Doris said many households will need reassurances that their supply “will not be put at risk by disconnection”.

He added: “Energy companies must do the right thing and act now to protect this group. There is an overriding public interest to offer them reassurances that they will be protected now but also that they are not burdened with debt once the crisis ends.”
