MSP welcomes 216% increase in number of island homes
Scotland’s island communities are benefitting from a 216% increase in the number of new homes built for social rent since 2007, according to new figures.
New statistics released by the SNP show that since the party entered government, more than 1,550 new council or housing association homes have been built in Shetland, Orkney and Na h-Eileanan Siar.
Highlands and Islands MSP Maree Todd said the SNP record on housebuilding contrasts with the previous Labour/Lib Dem administration, who built just six council houses during their term in office – all of those in Shetland.
Labour/Lib Dem Scottish Executive 1999 – 2007 | SNP Scottish Government 2007 – 2018 | Increase | |
Local Authority Homes built | 6 | 327 | Over 50 times more council houses built under SNP |
---|---|---|---|
Housing Association homes built | 490 | 1,226 | Over twice as many housing association homes built under SNP |
Ms Todd added: “These encouraging figures show once again that the SNP is leading the way across the UK in providing a supply of new, affordable homes in our island communities.
“We are delivering for the future by providing affordable housing across the country, and it’s clear that our ambitious housing plans leave no part of Scotland behind.
“I am delighted that the Scottish Government is continuing to deliver for our island communities – providing more social rent homes to ensure that they remain attractive locations for people to live, work and raise families.”
