Refugee group widens remit to aid Dundee’s homeless

Dundee The Caring CityA refugee support group in Dundee has transformed itself into a charity that supports people suffering from homelessness.

Dundee Supports Refugees has remodelled itself as Dundee The Caring City, taking inspiration from the similarly named Glasgow organisation.

The group was formed in the wake of the refugee crisis and has sent donations to those stranded across Europe as well as organising solidarity actions.

Due to the success of the refugee appeal, the Dundee group were left in a position where they had excess clothing and supplies at hand and has now decided to reach out to local homeless people.

The group, which will still provide aid for refugees, has applied for formal charitable status and expects this to be confirmed soon.

Director Mike Strachan said: “This will give us the scope to do more within the local community as well as nationally.

“When we had a surplus of items, it was difficult to help local groups when people had donated specifically for refugees.

“Forming Dundee The Caring City means we can help within the wider community and across Scotland.”
