South Lanarkshire Council’s housing and technical resources team recently threw its support behind Scottish Housing Day 2018.

A series of events took place across the day on September 19, with the aim of raising awareness of the latest developments in housing and to help people understand and make informed decisions.

As this is the ‘Year of Young People’ (YOYP) and SHD2018 focused particularly on housing options for young people in our communities.

The teams’ fundraising activities also collected more than £1200 for Who Cares? Scotland a national charity, working with, and advocating for, care experienced children and young people.

The charity’s Ewen, Andrew and Sharon met with the housing services teams and also visited a South Lanarkshire flat set up to give young people some experience of what living independently is like. At the same time it helps them plan for and make decisions about their future housing options and finding a home that’s right for them.

The group also visited one of the South Lanarkshire flats used by the council to prepare care experienced young people for independent living

Who Cares? Scotland advocacy worker, Ewen Kerr, said: “We are grateful to South Lanarkshire for inviting us to join them on Scottish Housing Day and for raising money for our charity. It’s greatly appreciated by everyone at our organisation and will help to ensure positive experiences for care experienced young people.”

Annette Finnan, head of housing, praised the efforts of the teams and highlighted the importance of working with partners such as Who Cares? Scotland.

She added: “Last year for Scottish Housing Day we fundraised to support local food banks and I’m delighted that once again our teams have been outstanding in raising more than £1,200 for this worthy cause.

“Who Cares? Scotland provides advocacy support for some of our most vulnerable children and young people. We work closely with them to ensure we can provide housing options and support that helps young people find suitable and settled homes.”
