Squaring the Circle – Practical housing support and homelessness

SHARE is pleased to announce the introduction of a new course in early 2019.

Squaring the Circle, developed and delivered by All-in, the training arm of Glasgow Homelessness Network, will look at the practical housing support that may be needed for tenants who have previously experienced homelessness.

Homelessness is an increasingly visible problem and continues to dominate the headlines; Shelter Scotland reports a 25% increase in households categorised as homeless since 2000 and BBC News figures project that there will be a 53% increase in homeless figures in the next 25 years. A 2017 report by Crisis estimated that there were 11,800 people in Scotland who were sleeping rough, sofa surfing, living in unsuitable temporary accommodation or hostels.

Homelessness as an issue will not be going away any time soon and we must as a sector look at how we help to alleviate the issue. The movement towards Housing First and rapid re-housing is gaining momentum as a way to relieve homelessness.

One way to help is to ensure that staff are appropriately trained to assist and understand those tenants whose homelessness experience presents specific challenges to the housing team.  This course has been designed for housing management and tenancy sustainment staff to help and support new and prospective tenants as they navigate the housing system and move towards sustained tenancies.

The course will look at a broad overview of homelessness: its context, causes and demographics; addiction and support; multiple tenancy failure and how to prevent it; housing first; signposting and partnership working; communication skills and how to protect yourself from vicarious trauma.

The course will run on Monday 18th March 2019 at the Bob Allan Conference Centre. You can find out more about the course and book your place HERE.

It can also be arranged as an in-house training event at your organisation so if this would suit you better please get in touch with Julie-Ann, one of SHARE’s training and development officers on jcloherty@share.org.uk or telephone 0141 370 6877.
