Tenants celebrate turnaround of River Clyde Homes tower block



As the £26 million regeneration of the Broomhill area of Greenock nears completion, one of the three tower blocks that sit at its heart has reason to celebrate.

Broomhill Court, managed by River Clyde Homes, was once a difficult to let 15 floor multi-storey block. But following a transformation that has seen it become retirement housing for those who wish to live independently but with added security and some support, it finds itself, once again, very much in demand.

A recent open day of the show flat saw more than 80 visitors attend, many of whom were keen to sign up for a flat there and then. There were 14 expressions of interest and 10 were allocated subsequently.

This marks a real turnaround in the fortunes of Broomhill Court and there are now fewer than 20 homes available in the block, but they are going fast.

Partners from Police Scotland, the HSCP and local councillors also attended. All were impressed by the transformation, particularly to the foyer area. A new community room has been developed and was christened ‘Suite 16’ (it was previously flat 16). Activities in Suite 16 include a breakfast club and a quiz session. It was opened by Board member Jenny Speck and long-term resident of 49 years, Helen Connor.

Helen said: “There’s been a lot of changes through the years. It now couldn’t be any better. I like the foyer and the new lights, the camera in the lift and the new security door entry so you can see people coming into the building.”

Elaine Cannon, service improvement manager (central), added: “Retirement living is proving to be a great success and the feedback from customers has been tremendous. My thanks go to all the long-term residents for their patience during the renovation and to staff from across the teams who have contributed to the successful transformation to ensure that every home in the block is once again loved.”
