Govan Housing Association was formed in 1971 in a trail-blazing move that led the way for others to follow.

Now the Association is poised to mark the milestone with a series of events later in the year with the community at the heart of it all.

While the pandemic has understandably changed the Association’s celebration plans, there is increasing confidence that with restrictions being eased, celebratory events will go ahead.

Chief executive Fiona McTaggart said: “This is a momentous year for Govan Housing Association and one we are confident the community can join us in celebrating.

“The last year has been unlike anything most of us have faced in our lifetimes but the easing of restrictions gives us hope that we can mark our remarkable half century with enthusiasm as we get back together once again.”

Govan Housing Association has a rich history of development and innovation. Founded in 1971 under the name ‘Central Govan Housing Association’, Govan Housing Association was the first community-based housing provider, leading the way for social housing provision in Scotland.

The Association was initially set up to carry out rehabilitation of 212 tenement flats in what was known as the Taransay Street Treatment Area.

Since then, the Association has taken on the ownership and management of over 1,600 properties in the local area and delivered a number of award-winning new build developments to assist with the continual development and regeneration of this proud and historic area.

Govan is no stranger to pioneering housing achievements. It was the location in 1915 of the rent strike led by Mary Barbour which intimately changed the law.

Mary Barbour is now immortalised in a statue at Govan Cross following a campaign to erect it by the Remember Mary Barbour Association. It was unveiled in March 2018.

While Govan Housing Association’s plans are at an early stage, it is anticipated, subject to easing of restrictions, to host a birthday party, street parties, an anniversary dinner and theatrical and creative events.

Fiona added: “Our tenants and the wide Govan community will be at the heart of all these celebrations and we look forward to marking our 50th anniversary in as full a way as possible.”
