90-year-old to zip slide down the Clyde for Glasgow City Mission

A 90-year-old supporter of Glasgow City Mission will be raising funds for the charity by zip-sliding down the Clyde this Friday.

Gladys Speedie turned 90 in April this year and she wanted to mark the event by helping others. She has galvanised her friends to sponsor her and convinced some of them to join her 100 feet up in the air as they aim to support those affected by homelessness, poverty and addiction in Glasgow.

Gladys said: “Having lived a long life I don’t recall the issue of homelessness like I see it now. I only hope I can raise awareness of the need to give help now. Every little would help but more would be better!

“If people suffer from depression or addiction they need help. People who don’t know how to look after themselves need to be given better support than is available now.”

Glasgow City Mission’s marketing and fundraising manager, Jack Geddes, said: “We have incredible supporters of all ages and stages. Gladys contacted us last year to arrange to join us for this event and we are looking forward to watching her zip slide along the Glasgow skyline this Friday. Gladys is an inspiration to us all!”

Gladys is collecting money using sponsor sheets, however, if you would like to support Gladys’s efforts you can donate online at her fundraising page.
