Angus Council u-turns on housing emergency declaration
Angus Council is set to declare a housing emergency, six weeks after a similar proposal was rejected by the local administration.
This decision follows a nationwide emergency declaration by the Scottish Government and a survey revealing plummeting satisfaction among council tenants.
The council’s housing spokesman, SNP councillor Kenny Braes, proposed an amendment to establish a dedicated committee to address the issue.
Brechin independent councillor Jill Scott, who had previously championed the call for an emergency, expressed surprise at the council administration’s change of heart.
Cllr Scott told The Courier: “Six weeks ago we could have had this amendment.
“I’m going to be the bigger person and accept Mr Braes’ amendment so we can all move forward and help the people of Angus.”
The move comes after the impact of Storm Babet and a housing budget hit of £9 million severely affected the area. Dozens of Brechin homes remain empty following the storm, and councillors have demanded action on around 300 empty council houses across the district.
Cllr Braes emphasised the need for a “thorough and wide-ranging” review of Angus’s housing issues, stating that a new committee would provide “purpose, focus and scrutiny” during the declared emergency.
