Applications open to help shape South of Scotland's future

People from across the South of Scotland are being encouraged to apply to become a member of the Regional Economic Partnership (REP).

The REP is looking to appoint a total of eight external members, representing the following sectors:

  • Four representatives from business and enterprise (private sector)
  • Two social enterprise representatives
  • Two community representatives

The REP is the forum that brings together a wide range of expertise and sets the direction of the regional economy across Dumfries and Galloway and Scottish Borders.

Part of the REP’s role will be the delivery of the Regional Economic Strategy through the recently refreshed Delivery Plan. The Delivery Plan highlights three Key Priorities: Housing, Transport, and Skills, which will be taken forward through dedicated subgroups. Partners will also be focusing on an additional nine actions, ranging from developing an inward investment plan and championing the Natural Capital Innovation Zone, to developing pathways for enterprising communities and businesses to access support.

Applications to become a member of the REP are now open until 0900 on Monday 10th February 2025.

Leader of Dumfries and Galloway Council, and current chair of the REP, Councillor Gail Macgregor said: “I would encourage partners and stakeholders to become involved, as their input and expertise is invaluable. A shared vision for the South of Scotland is the clear way forward to ensure a robust economic future for our region.”

“If you are passionate about fair and flourishing local communities, whatever your skills background, whether you have some volunteering expertise or experience at senior management level, anyone with an interest can get in touch and help shape our future.”

Leader of Scottish Borders Council, Councillor Euan Jardine, said: “It is important that the Partnership has a real variety of skills and experience from a range of sectors to ensure it best represents the South of Scotland, and applications will be welcomed from people right across Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders.

“If you want to help shape the future of the region and its economic development, please consider applying to become a member of the REP.”

Professor Russell Griggs OBE, chair of South of Scotland Enterprise (SOSE), added: “We have already seen positive actions come from the Regional Economic Strategy, such as our new Housing Action Plan (launched in July 2024). The REP has also overseen a successful Regional Land Use Partnership pilot, and welcomed the recent designation of the South of Scotland as a Natural Capital Innovation Zone.

“A partnership approach allows us to combine expertise, experience and resources in order for our area to benefit and maximise its potential in the most effective way.

“To keep doing the great things that are coming from the RES we need strong voices from across the South. If you are one of those, I would encourage you to apply.”

The eight new members from private sector, social enterprises and community groups will join councillors from both local authorities, as well as board members from South of Scotland Enterprise and representatives from other agencies.

REP members will be appointed for two years. Meetings will be held throughout the South of Scotland, and online, a minimum of four times a year. The role is voluntary, but expenses will be paid.
