A former church in Hamilton has been transformed into a collection of apartments for rent.

Developed by the Apsis Group, St Andrew’s Church on the corner of Avon Street and Haddow Street, is more than 125 years old and has been reconfigured to create six statement apartments with retained period characteristics including cornicing, archways, stained glass and architraves. Despite the age of the original building, the apartments are energy efficient and have a ‘B’ EPC energy rating which is extremely rare.

Each of the two-bedroom apartments has been individually designed and features its own unique attributes.

Flat four features an open plan kitchen, lounge and dining room with large feature arch windows and a mezzanine level. Double doors lead through to a practical utility room alongside the two double bedrooms and main bathroom. Both bedrooms have double-height ceilings and mezzanine levels, providing ideal dressing areas, accessed by feature ‘witches’ steps specially designed for the rooms.

The master bedroom also benefits from an ensuite shower room. The standard specification comes complete with integrated quality appliances, herringbone flooring and carpets, and this apartment benefits from its own elevator and internal stairway.

Flat one enjoys its own main door entrance and unique architectural features including columns, archways, feature beams and striking windows. This apartment features the original tower stairwell which opens to a large double-height lounge with an open-plan kitchen and utility room. The master bedroom features a specially built wardrobe as well as a luxury ensuite shower room.

Alex Reid, director, Apsis Group, said: “We’ve been delighted with the response to the apartments which, behind the scenes, represented a really complex construction project to reconfigure an old building into what we can see today, retaining as much of its character as possible.

“From its striking façade, with its unique windows to the interior specification, each detail had to be carefully considered to not only be aesthetically pleasing but also meet the very strict building regulations and requirements.

“Luckily, we’ve been able to utilise specialised software developed by Apsis Business Components that has enabled us to do this and keep a keen eye on project timescales and costs to ensure the refurbishment was delivered on time and within budget.

“The results, however, have been exceptional ensuring that residents enjoy a truly unique experience combining the old with the new to offer contemporary, energy efficient homes.”

The development is the final phase of a two-year project which included the delivery of fifteen affordable homes, delivered in two phases, complete with solar panels, car parking, infrastructure for EV charging points and a communal garden, on behalf of West of Scotland Housing Association. All the affordable homes are occupied.

Earlier this year, the development was recognised in the Property Awards for Scotland and scooped the winning title in the Individual New Build and Small Development category.
