Argyll Homes for All volunteers help at Oban nursery
Volunteers from Argyll Community Housing Association’s subsidiary, Argyll Homes for All (AFHA), recently gave up some of their free time to help with some improvement work to the grounds at the Stramash Outdoor Nursery in Oban.
Every winter, the nursery has issues with over 120 meters of paths that they have around their hilltop site which become boggy and muddy. This makes it difficult for the young children to run about freely. However, this has now changed thanks to AFHA’s staff.
The team improved the paths by laying ‘ecogrid’ matting and manually moving 20 tons of stone on the pathways. The materials were supplied by the nursery and AFHA provided the labour. The work was made slighter easier thanks to local plant supplier Hire and Supplies who made two small machines available for the day.
The work is part of Argyll Community Housing Association/Argyll Homes for All efforts to support local communities.
Area operations manager, Lee Holness, said: “It was a great team effort with AHFA staff members from all areas getting stuck in to what was a hard day’s work but still very enjoyable!”
Kate Hunter, Stramash Nursery head, said: “22 guys turned up to help upgrade our paths - this involved moving tonnes of gravel up the hill, flattening ground, laying ecogrid, making steps, putting up guttering and erecting a fence. Such an incredible show of community spirit, we are so grateful. Children thoroughly enjoyed watching all the machinery working and are much more confident walking up and down the paths. Parents are enjoying the new path to the gatehouse which is now much smoother and graded. Happy families and happy children!”
