Barista training programme launched for people experiencing homelessness
A social enterprise known for transforming the lives of people experiencing homelessness through barista training has launched a new impact programme in Scotland this month.
Partnering with the Wise Group, Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership, and Bethany Christian Trust, Change Please will offer transformative training and employment opportunities to local individuals.
Trainees will begin their journey with a comprehensive programme designed to equip them with essential skills for success to get back into employment. As a gesture of support, ‘We Love Coffee’ has donated state-of-the-art coffee carts that will be used during the training, enabling trainees to gain practical, hands-on experience in a real-world setting.
The training will take place at the Templeton Business Centre in Glasgow, a hub of innovation and community engagement. In addition to barista training where participants will learn everything from brewing techniques to latte art, the programme includes specialised courses on customer service excellence and a CV writing workshop, facilitated by volunteers from the Wise Group.
Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates will have the opportunity to secure paid placements with Change Please partners, which include David Lloyd Clubs, Everyman Cinema, BT Lexington, and Sodexo. These partnerships provide a pathway for trainees to transition into sustainable employment, allowing them to build their careers while continuing to receive the support they need to thrive.
“This is a ground-breaking moment for Change Please as we expand our reach into Scotland,” said Ken Love, managing director at Change Please. “By collaborating with local partners, we are able to provide comprehensive support that addresses not just immediate employment needs but also long-term career aspirations.”
“Recent statistics highlight a continuing challenge with homelessness in Scotland. In 2023-24, there were 40,685 recorded homelessness applications, a 4% increase on the previous year. These figures emphasise the urgent necessity for robust support systems and initiatives that can create sustainable pathways for individuals and families seeking to escape homelessness.”
Change Please envisions a future where everyone has equal access to opportunities, regardless of their past circumstances. The organisation’s holistic approach combines skill development, practical experience, and emotional support to ensure that trainees are well-prepared to secure stable employment in the hospitality sector and beyond.
