Bellway Homes said its new 395-home estate will set aside land for a new primary school with the majority of the 98 affordable housing units included in the plans nearest to the site.

Large areas of the new estate will be designed with shared surface streets which aim to promote slower driving speeds and allow pedestrians and cyclists to use the same routes.

In its design statement for the new housing estate, Bellway said: “Shared Surface Streets are intended to be informal community ‘places’.

“They are designed to encourage very low vehicle speeds to ensure they become places for people to walk, play, cycle and interact with neighbours.

“The more informal character, through planting and streetscape material aims to create a pedestrian-focused experience.”

The site to the south east of Auchendinny, off The Brae, is described as a 68-acre collection of fields which wrap around the Glencorse Centre and existing properties on The Brae itself.

Three is a belt of trees to the north of the site which is described as mainly made up of spars vegetation, and it is included in the Midlothian Local Development Plan for housing.

Developers said: “The proposed 395-home development represents a sustainable extension to the settlement of Auchendinny.”

Included in the plans are 21 different house types ranging from cottage flats to two to five-bedroom houses, which will be built over three phases starting at the north of the site.
