With just a few days left to apply to be part of the Scottish Housing Regulator Board, housing minister Kevin Stewart talks about why this is an important opportunity.

The Scottish Housing Regulator (SHR) plays a vital role when it comes to protecting the interests of people who use social housing services, whether this is people who are at risk of becoming homeless or members of the Gypsy/Traveller community.

I am seeking to appoint two new members to complement the existing Board. I would like to thank Lisa Peebles and Simon Little who have brought a wealth of experience and perspective to the work of the Regulator and will be stepping down from the Board next year.

The Board sets out what the SHR’s priorities should be. It is important to note that as an independent regulator the SHR reports directly to the Scottish Parliament.

To apply to the SHR’s Board, you don’t need previous board level experience. You just need to work well within a team, have strong communication skills and be able to challenge constructively. In particular, I am seeking:

I particularly welcome applications from groups currently under-represented on Scotland’s public bodies, such as women, ethnic minorities and people aged under 50. I also encourage applications from those with personal experience of having a disability arising from a physical or mental impairment.
