Brand new 834-home community approved by East Renfrewshire Council
A brand new community of 834 homes - including 209 affordable homes - has been given the go ahead by East Renfrewshire Council.
The Maidenhill, Newton Mearns development between CALA Homes (West) and Taylor Wimpey West Scotland will see significant investment in the area. Around 1,200 man years of construction work will be needed to create the new neighbourhood.
As well as building properties ranging from one-bedroom flats to five-bedroom detached homes, the developers will provide land and funding to a new community primary school – incorporating a nursery, along with sports and play facilities – and a community religious facility.
Maidenhill Primary, which is targeted to open in 2019, will sit at the heart of the development and will be delivered by East Renfrewshire Council. It will offer 444 primary school places as well as 120 nursery places, and its multi-use games area (MUGA) and 3G pitch will be available for use by the wider community.
Generous public open space will be a main feature of Maidenhill, with 135,145 square metres - the equivalent of 19 football pitches - remaining as communal greenspace.
A linear green corridor running the full length of the site will be created, and a host of pocket parks will be spread throughout the development.
As well as enjoying excellent transport links and amenities already serving the area, the development will be designed with the needs of pedestrians and cyclists in mind including the delivery of new public transport links that will provide strong connectivity to the town.
Jim McIntyre, managing director of CALA Homes (West), said: “We are excited to bring to life our vision for Maidenhill which has been carefully considered throughout this process. We are committed to creating a development that complements and becomes an extension to neighbouring communities whilstmeeting the housing need in Newton Mearns at the same time.
“Our experience and track record combined will deliver a new neighbourhood that will see significant long term investment in the area with the ultimate aim of creating a desirable development that is made for families to live, grow and lay down roots.”
Willie Burns, director of Taylor Wimpey West Scotland, added: “Residents will enjoy plenty of open green space and new schools, as well as existing local amenities and we look forward to works commencing. Our first on-site priority will be to build roads and the framework to enable delivery of the new school located at the heart of the development, which is targeted to open in two years’ time.
“We’re looking forward to getting started and becoming more involved in the local community as Maidenhill progresses.”
