Caledonia Housing Association celebrated the 25th anniversary of Muirlands Sheltered Housing Complex this week with a fantastic turn out from Muirlands residents and a wealth of visitors from the development’s past.

Built in 1992 for the Soroptimist Society, Muirlands is a female only development on Seafield Lane, just off the Perth Road in Dundee, and is owned and managed by Caledonia Housing Association.

Original architect Mr Angus MacDonald joined Prue Watson former chairperson of the Soroptimist Society and Dundee Councillor for the West End, Fraser MacPherson, to mark the occasion.

Ruth Baxter, a resident since Muirlands opened in 1992, was overjoyed to be presented with flowers by Councillor Baillie Fraser MacPherson to mark the complex’s anniversary. Ruth stated that the best part of living at Muirlands is the lovely company and wonderful community it provides.

Fraser Macpherson said: “I am delighted to be here on such an auspicious occasion. Muirlands is very much a part of the west end community. It is lovely to see such a good turn out and spend time with the residents, especially Ruth, who is a testament to the great facilities provided by Muirlands and Caledonia Housing Association.”

Designed to house retired professional women, providing secure, comfortable and independent living focused around a central court yard and communal lounge the Muirlands complex has stood the test of time.

Speaking before cutting the cake, Prue Watson, an active Soroptimist committee member who was part of the committee that commissioned Muirlands construction, said: “It was lovely to reminisce about the opening of Muirlands, paying tribute to Sheila MacBain and Maybelle Cruickshank who were fundamental in the internal design concept of the Muirlands development. I’m sure Dr Margaret Muir would be delighted to know her legacy is continuing to provide such high quality homes for the mature, professional women of Dundee.”
