Care home demolition paves way for new Linthouse affordable homes
More affordable homes are on the way in Glasgow thanks to a multi-million-pound housing development from Linthouse Housing Association.
Linthouse is set to build 39 back and front door properties and cottage flats for rent costing almost £10 million. They will be constructed on the site of a former care home.
The Davislea care home in Mallaig Road on the Langlands estate near Drumoyne had lain unused for since around 2019/20.
Now following its purchase from Glasgow City Council, demolition work by demolition contractor Reigart has begun to clear the site and make way for the construction work.
Local MSP Humza Yousaf visited the location to see for himself the initial work and praised the commitment to building homes by the Association which next year celebrates 50th birthday.
He said: “When these homes are built it will be another step forward in the ongoing delivery of affordable homes in a community where Linthouse has played a vital role for almost half a century.
“These new homes are much-needed and will be universally welcomed by the community Linthouse serves.
“They follow Linthouse’s award-winning Cromdale Square development nearby which replaced a derelict former school and was a further example of regeneration involving affordable homes.”
Irene C McFarlane, chief executive of the Association, said: “We are delighted to be starting work on our latest development of affordable homes which will transform part of the Langlands estate.
“It is further evidence of our commitment to our tenants and the wider community to keep on building homes.
“They will be funded by a mixture of private borrowing and grant assistance from the Scottish Government and Glasgow Council without both of whom the development would not be possible. We readily acknowledge their important financial contribution to make this housing a reality.”
Daveed Barceló Batllori, managing director of HOOS (Development Consultancy), which is working with Linthouse on the project, said: “It will deliver 39 low-maintenance, highly energy-efficient homes equipped with zero-carbon heating systems. It will also significantly enhance the local area by improving the site’s biodiversity.
“We are delighted to provide multidisciplinary services to support the Housing Association in delivering its ambitious vision for the area. The development includes a diverse range of homes, from large family houses to much-needed, fully wheelchair-compliant properties.”
Linthouse has a strong track record of regeneration work with a housing connection.
Two years ago it built 49 homes at Cromdale Square less than half a mile away from its latest venture on the site of the derelict Drumoyne Primary School.
This development scooped the “Best Regeneration Project” in a nationwide housing competition beating competition from across Britain.
In a nod to its scholastic past, the façade of the former B-listed school, which was built in the 1930s, was incorporated into the development and provides a striking feature overlooking the new homes.
