Ceremony marks start of Govanhill social housing development

The construction of a new flatted social housing development in Govanhill officially began this week with a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the occasion.

John Quinn, Director, Alan McDonald, Head of Development & Property Services and Audrey Flannigan, Vice Chairperson from Developer, Govanhill Housing Association joined main contractor Clark Contracts on Butterbiggins Road for the ceremony.

Clark Contracts has already completed the site enabling works on the previously derelict site, and has now begun the construction of the 24 energy-efficient homes.

Upon its completion, the five-storey complex will comprise nine three-bedroom apartments, ten two-bedroom apartments and five one-bedroom apartments, which includes accessible flats, along with designated parking spaces.

Audrey Flannagan, tenant and vice chair of Govanhill Housing Association, said: “We are delighted to break ground on another much needed development in Govanhill. The City of Glasgow is currently grappling with an acute housing emergency, there is no doubt about the level of housing need in the area. As such we are very pleased to start work on 24 homes for social rent.”

Danny McKibbens, operations director at Clark Contracts, added: “We are looking forward to collaborating with new customer, Govanhill Housing Association on this residential development, which will provide further much needed affordable housing in the Govanhill community. This is the second project our dedicated Housing Division are delivering and joins £30m of residential developments we have delivered in recent years.”
