CIH pays tribute to Steve Benson
The Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) said it is deeply sadden by the death of Steve Benson who passed away on Sunday 14 April, after losing his resolutely tenacious battle with cancer.
Steve’s passing is a great loss for the housing sector. A well-known figure, Steve provided over 50 years of service to the housing and homeless sectors.
Throughout his housing career, Steve was a proud and involved CIH member. He chaired both policy and professional development boards at CIH, was a treasurer for many years and held office as CIH president in 2008-09.
An exemplary housing professional Steve always held himself and others to the highest of standards, demonstrating a passionate commitment to providing quality homes and services to tens of thousands of people.
Earlier this year, despite his advancing illness, Steve attended the CIH Presidential Address and Appeal in London where he was presented with an honorary life fellowship of CIH by the chair of CIH’s governing board, Geraldine Howley, and guest speaker, Sir Keir Starmer.
CIH chief executive, Gavin Smart, said: “Steve had such an impact on so many people both working and living in the sector. Universally liked and admired, self-deprecating - the way he dealt with his illness was utterly inspiring. I’m proud, and honoured, that we were able to tell Steve this ourselves, awarding him with honorary life fellowship of CIH earlier this year at the Presidential Address and Appeal.
“On behalf of my colleagues, past and present, at CIH, I’d like to express our sincere condolences to Steve’s family and friends at this difficult time.
“Thank you for everything Steve, you will be sorely missed.“
Chair of CIH’s governing board, Geraldine Howley, added: “Steve was an extremely thoughtful, caring and kind person. He was so passionate and committed to CIH, with his valued contributions making a positive difference to the housing sector.
“Steve was a source of inspiration, and his legacy will live on in the work we do.
“My thoughts are with Steve’s family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time.”
