Colonsay Community Development Company to hand over houses at Scalasaig
Colonsay Community Development Company (CCDC) has confirmed that the first phase of its new housing project at Scalasaig, Colonsay is due to be handed over later this summer.
The development provides a mix of 2 and 3-bedroom homes comprising four homes for affordable rent, two homes for discounted sale and three homes for local workers. There are also three discounted serviced self-build plots for sale.
The project also provides two commercial business units which will help create local employment, and enable existing businesses to grow or new ones to start up. Further phases of affordable housing are planned to be delivered by CCDC.
The development will provide secure homes, improve living conditions, increase school numbers, reduce fuel poverty and contribute to the viability of the local economy by supporting the retention and growth of the resident population.
Like many rural communities, residency on the islands of Colonsay and Oronsay and the working-age population has decreased and there is insufficient affordable housing on the island to sustain the current population and businesses. The main aim of this project is to address these issues and kickstart a new era for the island community.
CCDC want to house people who envisage a long-term future on the island and who can contribute in a variety of ways to island life. The community wants to provide housing for their existing residents but also wishes to encourage people who may want to move to the island. This may include moving for a job offer or a business start-up, particularly providing essential trades and key skills.
Priority will also be given to families with children, individuals who are providing support for an island resident or those who wish to move back to the island where there is an established connection to Colonsay or Oronsay.
The development is located on the south side of the road near the Colonsay Hotel and is close to the ferry terminal. Sitting beneath Cnoc na Faire Mor, it is just a few minutes walk to the village shop, hall, pier, hotel and the Pantry cafe. CCDC is working in partnership with The Communities Housing Trust which is acting as development agent as well as providing letting agency services for CCDC.
The development has received funding from the Scottish Government’s Rural & Islands Housing Fund, Scottish Land Fund and Argyle and Bute Council along with industry partners MOWI and HIE.
Allocations have now been made to five households, for all the rented homes and one of the properties for sale.
