Community spirit on show at Hillcrest’s Edinburgh development
Hillcrest tenants at Wharton Square, Edinburgh made a huge effort to build a sense of community at the weekend.
At the development, which was designed to promote community spirit, the group hosted their second Big Lunch and invited all the neighbours along.
With an active tenants and residents’ group, volunteers rallied round to organise entertainment, food and refreshments. The only thing they couldn’t arrange was the weather.
One tenant said: “Was a great day despite getting rained on heavily for half of it. We improvised a little and got by nevertheless. We had three bands performing, and an amazingly popular kids’ entertainer. And enormous quantities of food brought by all.”
The development is a mix of socially rented and mid-market rent properties. Designed around a communal courtyard the properties offer the perfect opportunity for this kind of event.
Carol Petrie, Hillcrest tenant participation officer, said: “The Wharton Square Group is a great example that community spirit is not dead. An excellent small community in the middle of a big city has been created and they have hosted a number of events over the last year they’ve been up and running.
“The group is encouraging community inclusion and instilling a sense of pride into people’s home and it really seems to be paying off. Residents are genuinely proud of the Group’s efforts and their work is improving the quality of people’s lives.
“Well done to everyone involved.”
