Council leader cuts tape at new £80,000 Barrhead play park
Barrhead children have joined the leader of East Renfrewshire Council in cutting the tape at the opening of a new £80,000 play park.
Councillor Owen O’Donnell and children of Barrhead Housing tenants officially opened the new community facility in Newton Avenue, Auchenback.
The partnership project was built with funds from the local authority’s Place Based Investment Fund.
Councillor O’Donnell said: “I was absolutely delighted to be invited to open this fantastic new community facility and to see the smiles on the faces of the children who will enjoy playing there for years to come.”
Lorna Wilson chief executive officer of Barrhead Housing, added: “Crucially, we consulted tenants on the design and type of play equipment that should be installed.
“It’s a great example of how we put customers at the heart of our decision making.”
As well as tenants and their children, the opening of the play park - designed and built by Scotplay - was attended by Barrhead Housing board member Brian Connelly MBE and housing association staff.
A Barrhead Housing tenant confirmed the facility was already a huge hit with local children. He said: “I live across from the play park and it’s great to see something done with the space as there was just nothing there before. Now my children have been in there every day playing. It’s great to see.”
Barrhead Housing community investment Manager Bryan said: “We were delighted our application for funding to the council was successful.
“We are now progressing plans to revamp other parts of the area around Newton Avenue. The ideas being put forward by our customers include everything from bulb planting to community vegetable and plant growing.”
