Council team behind Caol and Lochyside Flood Protection Scheme praised

With work on the Caol and Lochyside Flood Protection Scheme in Lochaber near completion, the chair of the Highland Council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee has praised the work of staff leading on the major project.
The work will provide protection to around 300 homes in a coastal community on the shores of Loch Linnhe.
Councillor Ken Gowans said: “Our in-house project design team have been working very closely with the site supervision team in Caol to ensure the scheme is delivered successfully. We will be officially opening the scheme at the end of August so while the last bit of work is completed, I want to thank staff for their hard work and commitment.
“When I visited the site I was very impressed, especially with the contribution been made by some of our young engineers. I also want to pay credit to how the team have worked with both the local community since consultations began in 2015 and the contractor RJ McLeod. Our project design unit site staff and design team have involved the local residents and businesses throughout the construction process and have communicated progress and details of the works at every step.”
The £11 million project has been funded by the council and the Scottish Government.
Councillor Gowans added: “We are fortunate to have an in-house team who have the skills to design and manage such an important large-scale project that will ultimately provide the community with reassurance against flooding for many years to come. I am looking forward to joining the staff involved and the local community to celebrate the completion and official opening later this summer.”
The council team behind the project were recently shortlisted for the Resilient and sustainable communities category of the council’s Staff Recognition Awards which were sponsored by Story Contracting, Technology One, Wipro, E J Parker Technical Services, Sustrans and J. Thomson Printers.
This category recognises teams who help our communities to be prosperous, sustainable and resilient; making a positive difference to the lives of people; improving local opportunities and services; and involving and supporting local people to improve their own communities and outcomes.
