The purpose built houses have already been snapped up by tenants who were on the council’s waiting list.

The tenants will be moving to modern, energy efficient and low maintenance homes which are adaptable, flexible and ideal when it comes to catering for the needs of older people. To help reduce social isolation, there will also be enclosed communal rear gardens offering a tranquil setting for residents to catch up and have a chat.

The houses are designed to be suitable for wheelchair users too, making them the perfect choice for tenants with mobility issues.

The development took 10 months to complete and cost £1.2 million with half coming from the Scottish Government’s Affordable Housing Supply Programme.

Mr and Mrs Wilson who are moving from Coylton are keen to get into their new home. Mrs Wilson needs ground level accommodation so the new bungalow ticks a lot of boxes.

She said: “I am delighted with the bungalow, it will make such a difference to our lives. It is also in a good location with shops and other amenities close at hand.”

Councillor Philip Saxton, housing and customer services portfolio holder for South Ayrshire Council, said: “The bungalows at Elba Gardens will make a big difference and more than meet the needs of the tenants. The accommodation will allow people to live an active life in the community all within close proximity to Ayr Town Centre.

“Our tenants will also be happy with the energy efficiency of their new homes; they exceed all the current standards and will help keep energy bills manageable.

“Our programme of building accommodation to suit the needs of our tenants is set to continue as we complete further new build projects over the coming months.”
