Dargavel Village secures prestigious awards double
Stewart Milne Homes’ Dargavel Village development in Renfrewshire has been recognised with both an ‘Excellence in Planning’ award from the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and the Homes for Scotland ‘Large Private Development of the Year’ accolade.
The prestigious RTPI accolade recognised the overall regeneration programme – one of the UK’s largest brownfield schemes - which is being delivered by BAE Systems in collaboration with Renfrewshire Council.
Dargavel Village secured the award in the ‘Large Schemes’ category for the redevelopment initiative which will see the creation of 4,000 new homes as well a primary school, community centre, health care, retail, amenity and leisure facilities.
Stewart Milne Homes is creating a neighbourhood of 320 homes as part of the initiative and Stewart Milne’s phase of this new community won the ‘Private Development of the Year – Large’ category in the awards organised by trade body Homes for Scotland.
The new development from Stewart Milne Homes features a range of homes from a one bedroom coach house and two bedroom apartments through to family homes in 3, 4, 5 and 6 bedroom styles.
The Homes for Scotland Awards are focused on showcasing the high quality work that the industry produces and Nicola Barclay, chief executive for Homes for Scotland, praised the attention to detail by Stewart Milne Homes at Dargavel Village.
She said: “This development impressed and enthused our judges, who heralded it as an outstanding example of how a layout using ‘Designing Streets’ to the full can provide an end result of attractive streets and lanes which weaves nature into the everyday experience.
“The attention to detail on high quality hard landscaping, walls, front gardens lined with hedging and shrubs coupled with the wide housing mix and different material finishes create diverse streetscapes which give the development a village feel with a real sense of community.”
The RTPI Awards for Planning Excellence recognise the teams, projects and individuals that transform economies, environments and their communities all over the UK and internationally.
Jon Gettinby, Bishopton programme manager, BAE Systems Shared Services, said: “We’re proud that Dargavel Village has received this award. The development is a huge programme, transforming brownfield land into a vibrant community supported by new and enhanced infrastructure; improved travel links; retail, leisure and community facilities, and surrounded by a public accessible woodland area.”
Councillor Marie McGurk, convener of Renfrewshire Council’s communities, housing and planning board, said: “I am delighted Dargavel Village has won such a prestigious planning award.
“We are working closely with BAE Systems to deliver the regeneration of the former ROF Bishopton site, turning it into an asset that benefits Bishopton and wider Renfrewshire. It’s fantastic this work has been recognised at a national level.”
