Devrim Kilinc: Celebrating LGBTQ+ progress, confronting homelessness, and creating safe spaces

Devrim Kilinc, an LGBTQ+ case worker at Stonewall Housing, says LGBTQ+ History Month is a time to celebrate progress & highlight ongoing struggles.
LGBTQ+ Month is an opportunity to reflect on, celebrate, and honour individuals’ contributions, resilience, and history within our community. It also allows us to highlight the ongoing challenges many LGBTQ+ individuals face, particularly those experiencing homelessness.
At Stonewall Housing, we see firsthand how disproportionately affected LGBTQ+ individuals are by homelessness. We have observed a 33% increase in the number of homeless individuals we are supporting, which indicates the growing need for safe housing within our communities.
This month, as we celebrate the milestones of LGBTQ+ history and honour the brave individuals who paved the way for progress, we must also remember the struggles many continue to face today. No one should have to choose between being their authentic self and having a safe place to call home.
Discrimination, family rejection, and systemic inequalities are key factors contributing to homelessness among LGBTQ+ individuals. Many who come out to their families face rejection, eviction, or even violence. The absence of legal protections in employment and housing hinders our communities’ ability to achieve and maintain stability.
As a result, thousands of LGBTQ+ individuals end up on the streets, often lacking the support systems they desperately need. To complicate matters further, shelters and services are not always inclusive or safe for LGBTQ+ individuals. This issue is especially pronounced for the most vulnerable members of the community, including older LGBTQ+ individuals who experience isolation and transgender or gender-nonconforming people who face daily systemic discrimination.
How We’re Making a Difference
At Stonewall Housing, we are dedicated to creating an inclusive and affirming space for LGBTQ+ individuals who are experiencing homelessness. Our mission goes beyond providing safe spaces; we also strive to foster community and empowerment. We offer a range of services, including specialized housing advice, advocacy, and support for LGBTQ+ people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
The type of support we provide varies based on the specific needs of each person, whether through one of our supported accommodation schemes or via advice and advocacy for those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Our areas of expertise include mental health, domestic abuse, substance misuse, and supported accommodation. Currently, we operate supported housing in Brighton, Eastbourne, and London, with plans to expand to other regions across the UK.
