Dundee housing emergency declaration faces second bid
Dundee’s bid for a housing emergency declaration may be reconsidered this week, after having been previously rejected by the council administration.
This comes after the Scottish Government declared a nationwide housing emergency.
Opposition councillors urge the local SNP administration to reverse their decision, which they say contradicts the government’s stance. Labour group leader councillor Kevin Keenan is set to reintroduce the proposal at a committee meeting today.
Cllr Keenan had previously criticised the rejection as “astonishing and out of touch”. While nearly 8,000 people are on Dundee’s housing waiting list, council chiefs argue this is misleading as many are housed, The Courier reports.
The bid faces opposition from the SNP’s housing and estate management convener Cllr Mark Flynn, who insists “nothing’s changed” since the initial decision. He argues Dundee has plans in place to address housing challenges locally.
