A senior councillor is praising those proprietors who are making the effort to prevent structural damage. However, he is also voicing concerns about the problems posed by scaffolding that is left in place for prolonged periods.

Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure convener Councillor Steven Rome explained: “While I welcome building owners using scaffolding to carry out works, given the complexity of many maintenance projects which may include multiple owners, scaffolding can be left up for longer than is necessary.

“The obstructions on pavements create risks for people with visual impairments and those using wheelchairs or prams.

“It also has a negative impact on retail as it deters passing trade.

“Despite the removal of scaffolding from premises across the city centre, there are still around half a dozen important sites, where scaffolding has been in place for many months or even years.

“I am calling on all building owners to accelerate work on properties and remove scaffolding as soon as possible.

“The council has a very limited statutory role in this matter, but it is unacceptable, and it cannot become the norm that scaffolding is allowed to remain in place for such lengthy periods of time.”
