Dundee’s Caledonian House set for a partial makeover into student residences
A Dundee office block, Caledonian House, is set to be partially transformed into student accommodation, according to plans submitted to the city council.
The proposal, lodged by London-based Shelborn Asset Management, envisages the conversion of substantial parts of the building into 100 student apartments. Alongside the residential units, the redesign includes private dining spaces, cinema rooms, dedicated study areas and social facilities.
Originally built in the 1990s, Caledonian House previously served as the HMRC tax office for Dundee. The closure of the office in 2018 led to the loss of about 120 jobs, The Courier reports.
The building has since seen significant refurbishments and last year it welcomed a new tenant – an NHS 24 call centre.
In the planning statement, Shelborn Asset Management revealed: “The project involves the subdivision and refurbishment of Block C and 50% of Block B to create high-quality student accommodation.
“There are 100 new studio apartments being provided with additional facilities including private dining areas, cinema rooms, dedicated study areas and social spaces.
“The remainder of the building is to be retained for office uses.”
