The former Wallace Craigie jute works, known locally as Halley’s Mill, on the city’s Broughty Ferry Road was razed to the ground after diggers moved on site in May 2018.

However, Dundee City Council launched an investigation into the demolition of the B-listed building after it was claimed the firm did not have permission to carry out the work.

A spokesman for Craigie Estates defended its actions at the time, saying the building was brought down “on the grounds of public safety” adding they had applied successfully for a council building warrant. A police investigation is also continuing but no charges have ever been brought.

Craigie Estates has now teamed up with First Endeavour to begin the first stages of the planning process for a housing development on the site that now sits empty.

Yeoman McAllister Architects has lodged a pre-application notice (PAN) with Dundee City Council on behalf of the developer, although there is no information on how many homes, or what type of homes, are planned for the site.

An online consultation will be held on July 6 between 4pm and 7pm when the firms’ initial details will be set out to the public.
