The draft Plan has been drawn up by a multi-agency group including representatives from key council services, NHS Lothian and community and voluntary groups. It is based on the recommendations from the final report of the East Lothian Poverty Commission, taking into account all the work that has been undertaken to tackle poverty since the report was published in 2017 and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic over the last 18 months.

The draft Plan is based around seven themes: 

• In Work and not in Poverty – free from in work poverty
• Financially Included – access to benefits and free from debt
• Having a Home – a decent, affordable, warm and dry home
• Educated – all children and young people can reach their goal
• Healthy and Well – health inequalities are eliminated
• Connected – with your community and to the internet
• Empowered and Responsible – citizens and communities are empowered to influence policy and the council takes responsibility to reduce poverty.

A summary, easy read version of the full draft Plan has been created including quotes gathered from local residents by the East Lothian Poverty Commission, which bring to life the challenges that people living in poverty face and illustrate why meaningful action in this area is vital.

The summary document and the detailed action plan, including progress achieved so far and additional targets are available from the East Lothian Consultation Hub. 

The council said it is particularly keen to hear from communities and individuals who have been affected by increasing levels of poverty as a result of the COVID pandemic.

The consultation will run until September 26.
