East Renfrewshire Council breaks ground with ‘ambitious’ social housing development
Work to build the first council homes in East Renfrewshire for a generation continues with construction now underway at the Fenwick Drive site in Barrhead.
The development will be home to four three-bedroom terrace houses and six one-bedroom cottage flats and is expected to be completed in February 2019.
Part of East Renfrewshire Council’s ambitious plans to provide 240 new homes for social rent over the next five years, this second project follows the site at Robertson Street in Barrhead, where work commenced earlier this year.
A third site at Blackbyres Court, Barrhead, will see thirteen three-bedroom terraced and semi-detached houses, one four-bedroom house and six one-bedroom cottage flats built, with work expected to commence in Autumn 2018.
Each of the projects are being delivered in partnership with building contractor CCG (Scotland) Ltd. Based in Glasgow, the firm is one of Scotland’s most innovative contractor and manufacturers with a key focus in the delivery of affordable housing.
East Renfrewshire Council leader, Councillor Tony Buchanan, said: “I am delighted with the positive response from the first phase of our council house build project at Robertson Street. Improving the quality and range of housing suitable for East Renfrewshire resident’s forms part of our Strategic Housing Investment Plan (SHIP) 2018/19 - 2022/23 and I am delighted that we can deliver affordable and adaptable homes and expand our local communities for more residents to enjoy.”
Councillor Danny Devlin, convenor for housing and maintenance at East Renfrewshire Council, added: “Barrhead is very important to East Renfrewshire’s future plans and I pleased that we are now equipped to deliver more high-quality council housing for local people in the area. I look forward to seeing the sites continue to develop and benefit residents for generations to come.”
Calum Murray, director of CCG, added: “The Robertson Street project has went very well so far thanks to the use of our ‘iQ’ timber frame system which ensures a faster speed of construction and, upon completion, strong environmental performance. This same system will be used at Fenwick Drive and we look forward to continuing our partnership with East Renfrewshire in the delivery of the housing as well as providing local job and training opportunities.”
