The City of Edinburgh Council is continuing it 21st Century Homes commitment to deliver 20,000 new homes within a decade with the submission of plans for two new developments.

The local authority has teamed up with architects Anderson Bell + Christie for 40 houses for social rent on vacant ground at Bingham Avenue, Duddingston.

The development will offer homes from one-bed flats through to three-bedroom surrounding a communal garden.

Cllr Kate Campbell, housing and economy convener, told Scottish Housing News: “These sites are great examples of how we are using our land to provide more much needed affordable housing in Edinburgh. Our planning application for Bingham is to provide a mix of one, two and three-bedroom houses and flats for social rent. The plans also propose that we build colony style housing similar to that built at our multi-award-winning Leith Fort Development.

“Working with the Respite Centre for children with additional needs next door, there may also be an opportunity for a shared garden or space for tenants to grow vegetables.”

Elsewhere the council has unveiled plans for a further 30 mid-market flats on the site of a former Prestonfield care home.

Located at Peffermill Road, the project takes the form of two blocks sheltering a shared amenity area.

Cllr Campbell added: “At Parkview we’re proposing one and two-bedroom flats for mid-market rent. Tenants will have plenty of outdoor space with a south facing courtyard and gardens to allow for plenty of sunshine.”
