Elderpark and Linthouse mark 50th birthdays

Two neighbouring housing associations in Govan are celebrating an important milestone this year.

Elderpark Housing and Linthouse Housing Association are marking their 50th birthdays in 2025 having been part of the early creation of the community housing association movement.

This helped shape the high quality social rented homes across Scotland today.

The remarkable half century in operation has seen both Associations delivering community-based housing at the heart of their respective neighbourhoods.

And in keeping with the long tradition of Scottish housing associations, they have done far more than simply collecting the rent.

This has taken the form of a firm focus on supporting tenants and residents and creating strong, vibrant communities. The Govan area is renowned for its community spirit and the passion of local ‘Govanites’ has helped ensure that both Elderpark and Linthouse Housing Association continue to thrive into their 50th year.

Together they own 2627 homes delivering excellent housing for thousands of tenants and their families and over the past five decades have built hundreds of new homes.

And to mark the milestone, both Associations have created one-off anniversary logos which are seen here for the first time.

Elderpark and Linthouse are developing a calendar of celebratory events and initiatives which will go on throughout the year with tenants fully involved and ensuring the proud history of both organisations is commemorated.

Irene C McFarlane, chief executive of Linthouse, said: “This is undoubtedly a special year for us and our tenants. For fifty years we have been delivering quality housing and putting our community first. Now it is time to celebrate and our tenants will be very firmly part of our celebrations.

“Linthouse Housing Association plays a fundamental role in creating community wellbeing and we look to the future with a renewed sense of purpose and focus on our continuing important work.”

Gary Dalziel, chief executive of Elderpark, added: “Elderpark is very proud to have been part of the community for the last fifty years and recently I have been looking back at some of the history as we reflect on the past achievements.

“Local residents - who formed the management committees to combat poor housing conditions to the many employees who have contributed significant parts of their life to the organisation over the years - have all played a role in helping us reach this milestone. Throughout the year we will seek to celebrate the history of Elderpark together with focusing on the future.”

Both housing associations’ local MSP Humza Yousaf commented: “I send my warmest congratulations to the housing associations on reaching their half century. Linthouse and Elderpark have contributed immensely to the local community during their 50 years, not just in building new homes but in supporting their respective neighbourhoods and the people who live there.

“Community-based housing associations play a pivotal role in Scottish life. Over five decades Elderpark and Linthouse have grown deep roots in Govan and demonstrated an unrelenting commitment to their communities. Here’s to the next 50 years.”
