Dunedin Canmore’s Harbour Hostel was given the rating for 5 out of 6 Quality Statements inspected against, with the 6th receiving a Very Good grading.

The Inspection Report noted that “people spoke highly of their key worker and other staff working in the service”, with one person commenting that “staff are brilliant with support”.

The report went on to say that “we found lots of evidence of the positive outcomes people were achieving, many of whom had very complex issues to deal with in their lives”.

It also makes mention of how much the service was valued by City of Edinburgh Council, who said that they regarded Dunedin Harbour as “a highly performing service”.

Dunedin Harbour is a “wet hostel” which provides high quality accommodation and person centred support from a qualified staff team, to homeless individuals with complex needs, many exhibiting very challenging behaviour.

Service users have access to a wide range of additional services including community health, addiction groups, employability training, art therapy, IT classes and sports groups.

Dunedin Harbor was the first hostel in Edinburgh to accommodate couples and accept pets. It provides a unique monthly “dog surgery” staffed by students from the local Veterinary School.

The service has recently been augmented by the creation of a Resettlement Scheme, which gives hostel residents the opportunity to gain home making and independent living skills that will enable them to sustain a permanent tenancy in the community.
