The compost is a by-product of the waste taken from gutter cleaning in Ferguslie and elsewhere by PSA who have developed an innovative way to sift and filter waste that is normally sent to landfills to be reused as compost.

PSA director Robert Paterson said: “as part of our environmental responsibility we identified that waste from gutter cleaning amounts to about 100 tons every year.

“Therefore, we put a lot of thought and investment into a way to eliminate this waste and give something back to communities for a positive use.”

The Barochan Green Team have been supported by the Ferguslie Group to take over a common green space for community growing which helps improve the local ecology and support the wellbeing of residents and group volunteers.

Ferguslie Park HA housing officer, Vikki Phelps, said: “it’s great to see the dedication and hard work of local groups improving the environment and also how our supply chain can think innovatively to link with the community.”

Local Barochan Green Team volunteer Malgorzata Hayward added: “The compost which comes from local recycled waste will be used to fill our newly built allotment beds to grow vegetables, fruits and herbs. The idea that local waste can be used to produce local food and improve the environment shows the ways that we all need to start to think.”
