Flats plan for vacant Aberdeen office block

West Coast EstatesAn Aberdeen city square could be home to up to 13 new apartments under plans tabled for a former office block.

West Coast Estates is seeking permission to transform a vacant building in Aberdeen’s historic Golden Square. Developers said the £3.5 million work would help regenerate the city centre while preserving the character of the historic building.

West Coast Estates director Iftikar Mian told the Press & Journal: “We have owned No 6 Golden Square as an office block and it has been successfully let in the past.

“However, requirements in the office market are evolving and demand now is for open plan accommodation which simply isn’t possible in the traditional layout of period properties. “The office market is also being impacted by a plentiful supply of Grade A new-build offices, as well as a reduced demand due to the uncertainty in the oil and gas industry. “From our perspective a change to residential use is a common sense solution to revitalise a vacant and significant building.”

He added: “Together with our design team, we have produced plans that present a superb opportunity to do something special with a key site in Aberdeen.

“The proposals respect the history and heritage of the building whilst tuning in to contemporary residential trends.

“In our view it is the best of both worlds and in discussions with planners, the concept has been well received.”

Mr Mian said he believed the plans are line with Aberdeen City Centre Masterplan and its goal of establishing a ‘living city for everyone’.

He said: “We’re confident the plans for Golden Square fit well within the framework.

“We firmly believe that providing the right mix of residential, retail and business premises is vital to the long term future of the city centre.

“By replacing a vacant office building with a carefully planned residential development we believe it will add to the excellent work that has already been done to enhance the area.”
