Planning is often seen as a complex area to those without prior experience of the system but it needn’t be complicated, and the latest in a series of free webinars from Rural Housing Scotland (RHS) aims to give communities and individuals a grounding in planning for affordable, community-led housing.

Whilst specialist support is available from organisations like RHS to help those interested in tackling housing need in their area, the emphasis on community engagement, and heavy reliance on volunteers in many projects, means that it can be a steep learning curve for those involved.

“Our aim with these webinars is to help equip individuals with basic knowledge which will allow them to start thinking about how we might best tackle the rural housing crisis in their area,” explains Kirsten Gow, communications officer at RHS.  “Whilst we offer a range of support for community-led housing projects, from ideas stage to build, we firmly believe that equipping people with this kind of knowledge helps them make the best choices for their communities and makes projects more successful.”

Next Wednesday’s seminar will feature a presentation from planning and development consultant, and RHS board member, Richard Heggie. Architect and RHS development officer, Sam Foster, will also use his current work with Braemar Community Limited to discuss planning in the context of a ‘live’ community-led housing project. The talks will be followed by a Q&A session.
