Free WiFi in innovative development
More than 20 new flats have been constructed on the former Dens Metal site, in Dens Road, Dundee and will see new tenants receive free internet and a free tablet as part of an innovative pilot scheme.
Built in partnership with Hillcrest Housing Association, Northern Housing Company, Dundee City Council and property developer Cullross Limited - the development will offer residents free web access and a free device in an effort to ensure tenants can access vital resources online.
David Zwirlein, director of development and new business with Hillcrest, said: “Dens Road is a truly innovative development which explores the potential of what social housing can achieve.
“Our tenants at Dens Road have the option to be part of a pilot project to investigate the merits of free internet as a means to promote digital inclusion.
“The new approach to internet provision hopefully marks early steps towards ensuring no one is left behind as an increasing number of vital services move exclusively online.”
The Dens Road Digital Exchange (DDE) scheme will be trialled for 12 months, with broadband beingsupplied by Community UK.
Hillcrest says it is trying to encourage its customers to use its new online tenants’ portal — I-Housing.
In addition, tenants will also be among the first people to use energy supplied by non-profit firm Our Power Energy. Construction of the flats is almost completed and tenants are set to be settled in next month.
