Communities and charities across Aberdeen are set to benefit from the second round of funding allocated to support with the cost of living.

Aberdeen City Council’s Anti-Poverty and Inequality Committee agreed the proposals for the remaining funds from the £1 million provided to the council to support people with the cost of living crisis.

The second round will prioritise emergency support to provide much needed assistance for people under pressure over the winter months ahead.

Edward Obi, external advisor for Anti-Poverty and Inequality Committee, said: “As an External Adviser to the Anti-Poverty Committee, I am honoured to contribute to the vital work being done to tackle the challenges faced by our most vulnerable communities.

“The committee’s commitment to addressing poverty head-on, through strategic partnerships and innovative solutions, is both commendable and essential.

“I look forward to continuing our collaboration, ensuring that every effort is made to uplift and empower those in need, paving the way for a more equitable and prosperous future for all.”

Proposed allocation of the remaining funding:

  • Food procurement and pantries- Food Poverty Action Aberdeen (£242,038)
  • Scottish Welfare Fund Crisis Grants/ Community Care Grants- Aberdeen City Council Revenues and Benefits (£96,382)
  • Fuel poverty vouchers and advice- SCARF (£80,000)
  • Essentials for underprivileged families- AberNecessities (£40,300)
  • Christmas family panto package for low income families- Aberdeen Performing Arts (£10,000)

Following the meeting, members of the Anti-Poverty and Inequality Committee visited Cairncry Community Centre, as part of a series of planned visits, to hear from volunteers and to see how recent funding secured from the Prosperity fund/Common Good fund and fundraising has been used to refurbish the café.

Discussion topics included how the council can support community organisations to tackle poverty in the community and support financial sustainability.
