Getting serious about play: New training opportunities launched for the housing sector with serious games

What do board games mean to you? Maybe you think of a friendly game of Scrabble, or even a table-flipping game of Monopoly! But social enterprise Socialudo are taking board games to the next level - they want to get everyone in the housing sector strategically thinking in a different way with their new series of game-based training workshops, launched this week.

The team at Socialudo are passionate about serious play for serious change.

“Our serious games draw participants into real-world, future facing experiences” says Professor Vikki McCall, Socialudo’s creative director. “They stimulate both strategic and creative thinking, and bring diverse groups together, making a highly effective capacity-building tool.”

Socialudo was founded two years ago to use serious games to help organisations to plan, develop and collaborate, while making a real difference in their communities.

“Play is really powerful to harness creativity, curiosity and collaboration. Players get immersed in the story, with an emotional reaction, and that really strengthens their learning”, says April Edwards, Socialudo’s development officer.

Socialudo is launching a new programme of game-based training workshops developed especially for the housing sector. These support the continuous professional development (CPD) of both staff and committee members, and there are workshops to build knowledge of the sector, boost teamworking, help leaders plan creatively, and grow co-production with communities.

To celebrate the launch of this programme, Socialudo is offering housing associations who book onto a workshop before 28th February two places for the price of one, using the code LEVELUP25. The first ‘Level Up Your Housing Sector Know How’ training to build staff knowledge and networks will take place in Stirling on Tuesday 11th March. For just £250, you will get two places at this sector-wide training experience, lunch and refreshments, and access to the training event materials.

Over the past two years, Socialudo has been playing their Hopetown game about planning housing and services with lots of different organisations and communities, and you can see it in action here.

A Scottish housing association CEO said: “The experience really put staff in the shoes of others and helped us to understand more about the barriers and the challenges in building sustainable homes and community. It could not have been more relevant to what we are all about as a small housing association delivering homes across our rural community.”
