The 25-year lease of the single-story detached building will be made through the council’s People Make Glasgow Communities (PMGC) programme, which aims to empower local communities in taking a more active role in the delivery of local services.

Glasgow’s No1 Baby and Family Support Service aims to prevent or relieve poverty through the storage and distribution of clothing, toys and other goods to those in need, whether that be due to age, ill health, disability, or financial hardship. The charity has experienced a considerable increase in demand for support due to the recent increases in the cost of living and now needs to expand its services.

The charity helps children and young people, older people, people with disabilities or health problems, people with a particular ethnic or racial origin, other defined groups, community and other charities / voluntary bodies in the city.

Glasgow’s No1 Baby and Family Support Service applied for a long lease on the council-owned building through the PMGC programme having identified it as ideal. This application was assessed by the PMGC project working group and the Community Asset Working Group and recommended for progress - and will now bring an empty building back to productive use.

Councillor Ruairi Kelly, convener for neighbourhood services and assets at Glasgow City Council, said: “This is another example of the council’s People Make Glasgow Communities programme helping local organisations deliver much-needed services to many people and groups, while bringing an unused building in the city back to life. This particular charity has been delivering an important service in Glasgow, and the lease for the Charles Street Building will both help them and the people they assist.”
