Glasgow City Council to raise allotment rent by 400% in 2024
Glasgow City Council has announced it plans to increase allotment rent rates by nearly 400% in March 2024, raising the annual rent from £34.50 to £170.
The council stated rates have stayed put since 2012 and cited challenging public finance circumstances and the need to make £50 million in savings as reasons for the increase.
Concessionary rates for certain groups will also rise from £25 to £114 annually.
Jenny Reeves, chair of Glasgow Allotments Forum, expressed concerns about the impact on growers and called for better consultation on pricing. The council is considering spreading allotment costs over the year instead of a lump sum payment, the BBC reports.
