Glasgow community can get on their bike thanks to cycling partnership

Young cyclists enjoying the new bike storage facility at Riverside Dalmarnock
Residents at a Glasgow housing development are benefiting from secure cycle storage thanks to a partnership between charity Cycling Scotland and Link Group.
The companies worked together to install bicycle storage along with maintenance equipment for Link tenants at the multi-award-winning Riverside Dalmarnock development. This innovative initiative has been shortlisted in the Excellence in Walking, Public Realm and Cycling category in the 2025 Scottish Transport Awards.
Link Group Director of Communities Sarah Smith said: “Without secure storage, many residents couldn’t consider investing in a bike.
“Now, they can feel confident choosing cycling for commuting, errands and leisure – helping to create a healthier, more connected community.”
The initiative was developed with community input and guided by best practices in sustainable transport and tenant engagement.
Hugh Macgregor, Programme Manager at Cycling Scotland, said: “Not having somewhere safe to store a bike is a major barrier to more people cycling, particularly affecting those on lower incomes. With a third of all households in Scotland estimated to be without secure bike storage, impacting 1.5 million people, secure cycle storage facilities like the one at Riverside Dalmarnock make a real difference to residents and communities, helping more people to travel by bike for everyday journeys.”
The storage facility has capacity for 60 cycles, benefiting 78 households.
Some of the advantages include secured access, two-cycle repair stations, and a lock-loan scheme improving safety and security. There are also fewer car journeys resulting in environmental positives like lower emissions.
The facility was installed in collaboration with Grease Monkey, who create, design, operate and maintain active travel solutions.
Grease Monkey’s Managing Director David Wray said: “Advantages of improved secure cycle storage include increased numbers of communities cycling, which leads to improved health and wellbeing, and independence.”
Working in partnership with charities such as Cycling Scotland by creating opportunities for tenants to take up cycling is a key element of Link’s Streets into Communities Strategy.
Riverside Dalmarnock residents saw the new storage unit first-hand during an open day where cycling and sports organisations Dr Bike, PEEK, and Scottish Sports Futures encouraged physical activity and wellbeing through play.
