Gordon Laurie, the director of Sanctuary in Scotland, retired yesterday after 35 years in the housing sector.

On joining Sanctuary Scotland in 1999, Gordon oversaw the management of just 282 homes. The number of homes under his watch rose steadily, passing 6,000 when Tenants First joined Sanctuary in 2012.

The remarkable rise in stock numbers was bolstered by a buoyant development programme. Performance stayed strong throughout this growth in Sanctuary’s Scottish housing operations.

Gordon felt it would be an opportune time to retire when it became clear that Sanctuary Cumbernauld and Tenants First would formally join Sanctuary Scotland. Affected tenants voted overwhelmingly in support of a merger, which will take effect later this year.

Gordon said: “The merger of Sanctuary’s three Scottish organisations will create a strong and very significant player on the Scottish housing scene.

“I feel someone with a fresh approach and who is less set in their ways should lead it to ensure it achieves its full potential.

“During 17 years with Sanctuary I’ve been helped by many talented tenants, partners and colleagues.

“I wish Pat well and look forward to Sanctuary Scotland progressing further with the strong team I’m leaving behind.”

Sanctuary Group’s chief executive, David Bennett, said: “Since 1999 Sanctuary in Scotland has grown significantly, developing 3,000 new homes, supporting the regeneration of entire communities and bringing new organisations into the Group.

“I would like to thank Gordon for his outstanding contribution and wish him every success in the future.”

Of the merged organisation, Mr Bennett said: “Pat will lead a newly united Sanctuary Scotland that will have a significant voice in the country’s housing sector.

“This will be important now more than ever to ensure we can continue to make a positive impact on the communities we serve.”

Gordon’s replacement Pat Cahill, who has worked in the housing sector for 30 years, has been promoted from her role as Tenants First’s director of housing.

Pat said: “The merger will create a single Sanctuary Scotland more able to meet our tenants’ needs.

“I will work hard with our team, tenants and partners to make this united organisation a success.”
